Black Youth Mental Health

Our Commitment to Addressing Black Youth Mental Health

Black Joy Ave is dedicated to using its platform and resources to address the burgeoning mental health crisis in America, particularly among Black Youth. In 2021, the U.S. Suregon General issued a Youth Mental Health Advisory calling upon the American people to recognize the severity of this growing issue and encouraging them - with a set of recommendations - to act now. It is reported that between 2007 and 2018, suicide rates among youth ages 10-24 in the US increased by 57%. Moreover, the National Center for Health Statistics suggest there were tragically more than 6,600 deaths by suicide among the 10-24 age group in 2020.

Alongside the Surgeon General is a team of activists, organizations, and members of the U.S. government who have all come together to tackle this issue head on. We at Black Joy Ave are committed to joining them in this fight.

While this is a challenges for many, research has shown that it is impacting some communities more often than others. The taskforce on Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health recently reported that The suicide death rate among Black youth has been found to be increasing

faster than any other racial/ethnic group. This should do more than shock us, it should compel us to action. That is why Black Joy Ave is proud to announce that a portion of every purchase made from our store will be placed into the Black Joy Ave Scholarship Fund. This Fund will work to create a pipeline for more Black representation in the fields of psychiatry, family counseling, and social work, just to name a few. Stay tuned for our launch of the inaugural Black Joy Ave Scholarship for Students Tackling Mental Health (Expected Release: Fall 2022).
